Here's one reason why I love Windows 7.

Thought I would just let those of you who haven’t yet had the chance to try out Windows 7 just why this user is so in love with using it and wouldn’t go back to using Vista or XP even if someone paid her to! Many of you will be aware of my ‘how-to’ posts that I do to help other users on Windows Live to get to grips both with the Windows Live site itself and also the Live Essentials suite of desktop applications.

These how-to’s tend to be quite time consuming simply because as I  construct the blog post, I like to work my way through each area that I am posting about step by step. This usually entails going to the Windows Live site (or alternatively the application if I am posting a how-to about one of those) and then as I work through each step so that I can write about it, skipping back and forth between Writer and the site page/application in question.

Despite always having them all ‘close to hand’ on the taskbar, this still can necessitate clicking backwards and forwards in order have access to both as I work.

However, in Windows 7 my how-to posts are now a complete joy to do! Why? Because I can have both screens in view at the same time and work across them both, going from one to the other without clicking anything! I just use snap!  Writer on the left hand side, the Windows Live feature that I am currently working my way through ‘step by step’ on the right! And because it is visible to me at all times, I then don’t forget the steps I am taking  as I transfer them into my post in Live Writer!

Easy Peasy blogging in Windows 7

The same applies to whenever I need to add a picture from my picture files into my post. All I need to do is have Writer on the left hand side, load up my picture files and snap that window to the right hand side of my screen. Then when I want to add a picture into the post I am currently working on, I click on that picture and simply ‘drag’ it across to the post on the left at the position I want to place it, and ‘drop’ it in place! (Just done that now for this next picture)

Drag and Drop into writer from right hand screen

You can’t get much easier than that! So for me Windows 7 has made the whole effort of constructing and writing my how-to’s so much easier to do and less time consuming as I no longer need to ‘click’ from one source to the other. I love Windows 7 and would not return to using any of its predecessors for anything. It just helps to make your everyday tasks so much easier to do.

Now that would be annoying Grant - I leave a couple of sentimental pics on my camera, so when I plug in the memory chip, I like to go to "view file" in the auto pop up, and move whatever I want to over to "my pictures" which solves 2 problems at once, uploading the pics and deleting them off you chip!

Do you use Live Photo Gallery on your computer?
    Nov. 6
Yes, it is when I connect my camera.
The reason it is annoying is that I let the photos build up in my camera then every now and then I download all photos, good bad, even completely useless to a file. It is like the old days keeping your negatives. You never know what was a random shot could be an important archive of history.
So if I want just one recent shot I do not want to import every other image.

Grant I will check this for you and get back to you. Do you mean that when you connect your camera to your computer? You are calling it a download but I presume you mean 'import' from your camera. And do you have Live Photo Gallery on board or are you trying to inport from the camera using just Windows 7 itself? Please reply back and I'll talk you through it.

Grant asking for help again. I tried to download a photo from my camera. In Xp it automatically came up with the all photos which allowed me not to select or select which photos to download, in Windows 7 it appears I have to download the whole lot (most have been downloaded before) unless I go into My computer and click onto my camera and open the files so I can choose the one photo I want. This seems such a backward step so I presume I am doing something wrong, settings etc.

Grant your a man after my own heart! Writer is the perfect tool for composing your blogs, its 'tailor made' for the job. Anyway as I keep on reminding Greg, we don't all need to use Office applications do we? You will be no doubt pleased Grant with the new version of Writer when we finally get it as I understand it will be using the fantastic easy to use Ribbon Interface. (same as Movie Maker) so then everything will be even easier for you.

Yes. I agree. But most of the hints about changing codes to resize, change fonts. colours get rid of advertising links is now all done simply in Windows Live Writer. So for me this still my favourite for simplifying things, but I still have the knowledge mainly for embedding videos.
Greg, one of the first things I did was to shake. hahaha

Wow! so simple, thanks. Just missing one step makes all the difference, not leaving the cursor in WLW. This is why we need more people like you in spaces.
The people who had all the ins and outs when I started spaces 4 years ago have left.
The main one, his space is still there but no more activity was "Oscar's Room". Being completely ignorant about computers I learned so much while using his hints and re writing codes while creating my space.
    Thanks again!!!

Aero snap is indeed new to Windows 7 (although there are 3rd party programs that will make a similar feature available in older versions of Windows as well). In the past, you had to right-click the taskbar and choose to "tile" windows. This is certainly simpler, and it's one of the myriad reasons that Windows 7 provides a better user experience.

The ability to drag content between windows is completely separate from Aero snap, and it really depends on how/whether the individual programs were designed to support drag-and-drop content. For instance, you've always been able to drag a selected chart from Excel and drop it into a Word document. But those programs were specifically built with that kind of content sharing in mind.

I think TG's post is really focused on Aero snap as a new feature of Windows 7. And she's right, it's a really neat feature. Anyone ever try Aero shake? Next time you have a bunch of open windows all piled up on your desktop, grab the title bar of one of them and give it a good brisk "shake." See what happens to all the others.

Grant, put the writer screen on the left or right and begin writing your post. Then when you want to included a photo or picture into your post, leave the cursor on the line where you want to 'drop' the picture, open up your picture folder, go to the picture that you want to include in your post, left click on it and then holding down left click, drag it over to the Writer window and then just drop it into the spot where you left your cursor.
If you like I can do a video of it to help you....

I tried this. clicked on to my photo then tried to drag to my Window Live Writer all I get is a circle with a line across it when I cross screens, what am I'm doing wrong?

Yes but Aero snap is not the same thing. With this, you snap one window to the left and the other one to the right hand side. Then work across both. I know you have always been able to have more than one window open, but could you then work across them both? From one to the other?

Don't often have to do this but is a useful feature. However right back as far as Windows 98 you could have 2 windows open on screen, more if you wanted,, but the size of monitor in those days did not make ist such a useful feature as it does now. Large screens and multiple monitors do lemd themselves to this type of usage.
